I’ve always been fascinated by design, particularly when it comes to digital interfaces. In the Spring of 2016 I decided I wanted to learn more about this curiosity, so I enrolled in an online course called Design 101 through DesignLab. I learned quite a bit about what constitutes good design and how to improve usability across several different platforms. My favorite part of the course however was the homework. Throughout the course, we were encouraged to put what we were learning into use. This culminated in a final project I had been brainstorming for quite sometime. The idea for Onward came from my own frustrations of being unable to find local outdoor hikes and adventures. As a part of my final project for Design 101, I went about creating a mobile web landing page for what Onward might look like. After the course, I wanted to continue learning and building my skills with Sketch, so I started designing a mobile UI for an iOS version of Onward. My hope is to one day turn this idea into an actual service that people can use here in New England.
